EMMA and REFIT tariffs
EMMA has benefits over and above the simple matching of household loads to micro-generator outputs. The 19 cent per kWh REFIT (Renewable Energy Feed-In Tariff) for Renewable Energy Micro-generators in Ireland means that EMMA offers you additional benefits. For example:
- EMMA minimises "own use" of high value REFIT power that can instead be sold to the national grid. In fact, EMMA has the ability to double the value of a large proportion of the night time output from wind and hydro turbines, on sites where the new 19 cent per kWh REFIT tariff applies. EMMA does this by
a) minimising household load at night when the turbine is generating, thereby maximising the export/sale of power for 19 cent per kWh, and
b) maximising household load and storage at night when the turbine is not generating, thereby making optimum use of the low night rate import tariff.
- EMMA can be programmed to export the first 3,000 kWh of high value REFIT power as rapidly as possible every year to front load the related income revenue. EMMA will revert to conventional operation after this has been done. The high rate REFIT tariff applies only to the first 3,000 kWh exported every year.
- EMMA can be used to optimise use of varying import (and export) tariffs following the roll out of smart meters.
- EMMA will come into its own on all aspects of use when grid electricity tariffs exceed REFIT tariffs, which is already happening in Germany and will likely be the general rule everywhere when oil prices "recover".
- EMMA can also be used as a mini-BMS (Building Management System) to minimise electricity consumption by switching unecessary domestic devices, appliances and systems off at night and when the house is empty.
